Ono On Capcom And His Fight To Bring Back Street Fighter & Onimusha

Ono is the main reason we have Street Fighter 4 and 5 as Capcom believed they were done. The man who has become the face of Capcom fighting game scene did so because of his passion for them. A passion he used to fight for them.

“I was always into fighting games. I wasn’t at Capcom when the first Street Fighter came out, but Final Fight was a game I really loved. It was one of the things that really inspired me to try and work for the company that made the game. I put so many 100 yen coins into Final Fight that when I went for my interview at Capcom, I said ‘it’s time for you guys to pay me back all this money, okay.’ They really liked that approach and attitude, so that was one of the reasons they hired me.

To be honest, this was before social media and the internet. It was difficult to get a feeling of how big it was around the world. Of course being in Japan, we got a direct sense from Japanese fans in how big of a hit it was. It wasn’t until I worked on other things like Onimusha later that it became the time when I could see the global phenomenon the series had become.

It was that kind of thing that led me to think ‘I need to go Capcom Japan and tell them look the world is ready for a new Street Fighter game,'” Ono reminisced. “Part of the reason for getting Street Fighter 4 off of the ground might have been the fact that Onimusha fans were focusing on asking me Street Fighter questions back then.

Four or five years ago with Street Fighter 5, I didn’t think it was going to turn out as well as it did.  There were some bumpy parts of the road we say. I think thanks to the fans’ support and dedication and also to you guys in the media who of course reported on the bad times, but I think everyone kept an eye on the game. Whenever it turned around, got better and more accepted, they were willing to re-examine it with articles saying ‘take a look at it again. It’s getting better.’ Over the years that support from the fans and the media got us to where we are today.”

Now to be clear Ono help brought back Street Fighter but as you hear that isn’t the only thing he wants to bring back. In the past he mentioned other fighting games such Dakrstalkers as well as action games such as Onimusha. With Capcom looking back at its old IP this might just happen. We will see what Capcom does going forward.  Let me know your thoughts.
